WAKE UP and ENROL! - July 28th 2008 Local business owners and teenagers about to turn 18 face the risk of being left out of the Warringah Council elections on Saturday September 13th.
Local independent group Wake Up Warringah is joining with the Australian Electoral Commission calling on all eligible voters to make sure they have their say on election day.
Lisa and Greta Whyte, twin sisters from Collaroy, are just two of the local teenagers who will be signing up to make sure their name is on the roll of voters by the deadline on August 4th.
“It’s great that the Electoral commission recognizes that we have strong opinions and we care about how our council is run” said Lisa Whyte.
Wake Up Warringah says it’s important that anyone who is 17 years old enrols now to vote.
“September 13th is a crucial day as democracy finally returns to Warringah. It’s important then that everyone has a chance to cast their vote” said Michael Regan, Mayoral candidate for the Wake Up Warringah group.
“Local residents who are 17 years old but turn 18 before September 13th, can register with the Electoral Commission in order that their name will appear on the roll for the Council election” said Mr Regan.
“So even if your 18th birthday is on September 12th, you can still have your say at the ballot box” said Mr Regan. “It’s great that the Electoral Commission recognizes that young people have an important role in the democratic process and it’s vital that their voice is heard.”
Wake Up Warringah’s B Ward candidates Helen Wilkins and Kym Weekes are also encouraging business owners and lessees to apply for inclusion on the roll of electors.
“If you’re not a resident but own or lease a property in Warringah, you can still apply to be included on either the roll of non-residential owners or the roll of occupiers and rate paying lessees” said Dr Wilkins.
“Business owners and lessees play an important role in our community and it is vital that they contribute to the decision making process” said Ms Weekes.
The electoral rolls close at 4pm on Monday August 4th so all applications need to be finalized by then.
“We’re encouraging everyone in Warringah to check their enrolment details. Whether you’re 17 or 70, a business owner, homeowner or a tenant, you have a right to vote on September 13th” said Mr Regan. “It’s important that everyone has a say – that’s what democracy is all about. So check you details and make sure you’re included.”
17 year olds wishing to enroll can contact the Australian Electoral Commission at www.aec.gov.au or 13 23 26.
Application forms for business owners and lessees can be obtained from Warringah Council or downloaded from their website at www.warringah.com.au Back to Press Releases
